Education overview

Education programs are an essential part of what we do, enriching the experiences of our current patrons and building audiences for tomorrow through our student and young people outreach.  Our Wide Open Learning Series is a series of public events presented in conjunction with one of the operas of the mainstage each season.  Dead Man Walking inspired the exploration of capital punishment and religious redemption.  In 2007, the world-premiere of Frobisher brought about collaboration with the Arctic Institute of North America and discussion about environmental issues.  This season, Little Women has inspired a variety of topics from The Fashion of Little Women to Women in Theatre.

To further enhance the opera-going experience, Calgary Opera’s Pre-show Chat series is designed to help audience members deepen their understanding and enjoyment of the opera they are about to see.  Speakers include opera professionals: musicians, composers, directors and conductors as well as professors in the field of opera.

Calgary Opera also has a number of programs that reach out to students of different ages, from Let’s Create an Opera that gives students the tools to create their own original opera to the Opera in Schools Tour that brings one act operas into schools performed by Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artists.

Talisman Energy shares our belief that it’s vital to reach beyond our audience and patrons to the community at large and we thank them for their generous support.
