Called a singers' opera in that it has divine melodies, national and historical context, including musical Americana, and time-honoured characters and plots, The Ballad of Baby Doe is the centerpiece of Calgary Opera’s 2007-2008 season. Set in a silver mining town in Colorado, circa 1880, this is a boom-bust story about love, power, scandal, and financial ruin. After premiering in 1956 at the Central City Opera House, The Ballad of Baby Doe has become an American classic. We are thrilled to be presenting the first professional Canadian production of this memorable opera. |
