Don Giovanni In the News
Kenneth DeLong reviewed opening night of Don Giovanni for the Calgary Herald
Review: Calgary Opera presents Mozart's Don Giovanni as a mirror of humanity
“While enjoying a status roughly equal to The Marriage of Figaro as one of the world’s greatest operas, Don Giovanni is far more ambiguous in the implications of its story. To be sure, the immoral Don finds retribution at the end – effectively portrayed in this production. However, the relationship between the Don and the three women he pursues is far more complex.”
“As is typically the case with well-sung opera, one rarely leaves disappointed. In this instance, the reception given by the audience on opening night gave no doubt that it was happy with what it had seen and heard, the performance receiving many curtain calls and loud applause.”
Eric Volmers interviewed Stage Director Anna Theodosakis for the Calgary Herald.
“The way that Mozart wrote these women, they are very strong and powerful,” says director Anna Theodosakis, who is making her Calgary Opera debut with Don Giovanni. “For some reason, sometimes that goes by the wayside in traditional productions. So I was really keen to bring out more of their strength, build the relationships between the women themselves, and just assure that they as survivors have a lot of agency and that both the singers and the characters feel empowered.”

Aryn Toombs interviewed Stage Director Anna Theodosakis to for Livewirecalgary.com.
“Traditionally the story revolves around the titular Don Giovanni, but in Director Anna Theodosakis’ take, the powerful women characters of Donna Anna, Donna Elvira, and Zerlina are getting a new focus highlighting their roles in Giovanni’s downfall.”
